A day devoted to children
On 19 December 2007, the President of FC Shakhtar, Rinat Akhmetov, together with his friend Igor Krutoy, a famous Russian composer, laid aside their business affairs to devote this day to children who need care and attention more than others. On St. Nickolas Day Ukrainian businessman and Russian musician held their traditional charitable action "Shakhtar for Children!" This year the tandem was joined by the Foundation for Development of Ukraine.
Rinat Akhmetov and Igor Krutoy have provided considerable support to orphan schools, specialized health centers and sanatoriums for seven years in a row. This year the charitable aid has been provided to 103 children's institutions with over 12,000 kids. It was the first time the event covered the family-type children homes.
A home where a cat and a dog get on well together
This was the first destination of Rinat Akhmetov and Igor Krutoy. The Alexandr and Olga Kogans' family-type children home is worth the kindest words. That day there was quite a bustle in the Kogans' six-room apartment: everybody was getting prepared to welcome the guests. The Kogans have ten adopted and five own children, a cat and two Caucasian ovcharka puppies.
"We have baked a cottage loaf, the girls have cooked the pancakes to welcome our guests. Of course, we are agitated, for such honorable guests do not visit us every day. If only you knew how important this support is for us," said Olga Kogan, a parent – fosterer (this is her official title).
Finally, the most exciting moment occurred: Rinat Akhmetov and Igor Krutoy entered the house. The hosts presented bread and salt, and the kids gave the guests a warm and jolly welcome.
"Vania and Nastya study in the 6th form, they take care after the younger kids and help the mom. Vanya attends musical classes. Zhenya, Kristina and I study in the 2nd form and attend dance classes. Dima, Ruslana and Vika study in the 1st form and learn to play violin. Danil is 4 years old, so he doesn't go to school yet," Ksyusha started to introduce her brothers and sisters to the guests.
Afterwards, they made excursion around the apartment to show the guest where the kids play and do their homework.
"This is our room, a room for girls. We clean and decorate it with our bead made crafts and drawings," Ksyusha explained.
Having seen all the rooms, the guests were amazed by what they had seen and heard.
"You probably don't realize how kind your hearts are. The things you do are exemplary. Thank you heartily!" said the President of Shakhtar FC to Alexander and Olga Kogan.
After the excursion around the apartment which now has new household appliances and furniture thanks to financial aid provided by the participants of the charitable action, the guest made a photo with the family and wished them all the best in the incoming year.
But the Kogans wanted to give something in return. The kids presented to Rinat Akhmetov the Shakhtar's new emblem made with a help of a computer presented to the family the football club. The girls sang a song about mother for Igor Krutoy.
Making house warm
Another place visited by Rinat Akhmetov and Igor Krutoy was Ptashenya [Birdie] orphan home in Makeyevka. The guests brought for the kids the clothes and prams decorated with Shakhtar emblem. The kids thanked them with cute things made out of puff paste in form of birds representing the name of the orphan home.
"We have everything but a boiler-room. We feel quite helpless without it. We depend on a municipal boiler house which performance is quite unreliable. So, sometimes we have tough times," director of the orphan house turned to the President of the Football Club.
"We will see how to manage it in the best way to make your house always warm. We have to contact local authorities. I believe we will have it settled," Rinat Akhmetov gave a hope to the director.
Afterwards, the kids gave a real concert in a concert hall. Everybody was touched by songs and dances performed by young artists. They asked Igor Krutoy to accomplish the concert. He played his famous song, and the housemasters sang a remake which lyrics were adapted to orphan house's realia.
By the way, several years ago Jan Laštuvka, Shakhtar's goalkeeper, adopted a girl exactly from this orphan house.
Football and music stave
The third and the last destination that day was Donetsk secondary orphanage-school No.2 for children with mental and physical disadvantages. The guests were shown the classrooms, including computer classrooms, tailor and planing shops.
It is worth mentioning that the tailor and joinery shops have received new equipment presented by Shakhtar FC. Now the apprentices are able to learn their professions using the state-of-the-art sewing machines and planing benches. In the gym the guests met the school's football team. Shakhtar President endued the football players with a pile of balls. The young players could not be more excited about it.
"Dear kids, I will be happy to see you at the stadium. We really need your support," Mr. Akhmetov said and shook hands with the young sportsmen.
Afterwards, the guests were invited to a concert hall where they saw a performance of winners of local competitions. At the end of the concert the kids handed to Rinat Akhmetov and Igor Krutoy their handmade presents. First it seemed it was ordinary backgammon sets, but when Shakhtar President opened his present he saw a little football pitch there, and his friend Igor Krutoy received a music stave from the young handymen.
"Dear kids, thank you heartily! I congratulate all of you on St. Nickolas Day and wish you all the best. Apart form other things may you always have means to meet any challenge," Rinat Akhmetov said in the end.
