Today, on 8 July, the press-conference launching the up-to-date digital tomograph took place at Lvov State Regional Diagnostics and Treatment Oncology Centre. The equipment was purchased by Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation for Development of Ukraine under Cancer Can Be Cured project. It cost USD 800, 000 (UAH 6.5 m). The new 24-slice computer tomograph provides high-fidelity image with a significant reduction of X-ray irradiation impact on the patient. High clinical efficiency of the scanner allows to get the required diagnostic result promptly. The device enables doctors to plan the X-ray therapy, perform diagnostic workups of the entire body, virtual endoscopy, perfusion, quantitative estimate of vascular abnormalities etc. The tomograph diagnostics is free of charge for the Centre's patients.

Vasiliy Gorbal, Chairman, Lvov Regional State Administration: “The doctors at the Oncology Centre say they have been dreaming about this equipment for all their lives. You see, dreams come true. Every year about 18, 000 patients receive specialized in-hospital medical assistance at the Regional Oncology Centre.  From now on, people can have an examination done with a digital tomograph and the doctors can make an exact treatment plan. The tomograph will provide the full information on the neoplastic process to reduce unfavorable X-ray impact during the treatment course.  In 2010, the purchase of medical equipment for the Oncology Centre was budgeted by regional authorities in the amount of UAH 500, 000 which was usually not enough to buy high quality equipment. We are grateful to Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation for Development of Ukraine for purchasing and prompt setup of the equipment with the total cost of UAH 6.5 million. We hope for further cooperation under the project Cancer Can Be Cured. Timely Cancer Diagnostics and Treatment. ”

Anatoliy Zabolotny, Director, Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation for Development of Ukraine: “In June 2008, President of the Foundation Rinat Akhmetov initiated a new project Cancer Can Be Cured. Timely Cancer Diagnostics and Treatment. To deliver on the project, Mr Akhmetov allocated big money – USD 315m which significantly exceeds the amount presupposed by the state budget for equipping specialized oncological facilities in 2010. A certain part of this amount was distributed to improve the treatment and diagnostics facilities in eight oblasts of Western Ukraine. Today, we saw the operation of the new modern computer tomograph that allows to make quality diagnostic workups of the entire body, in particular, to diagnose primary tumors, make exact stadiation, assess treatment efficiency and so on. We'd like to emphasize that the tomograph examination is free of charge for all the Centre's patients and for patients from other hospitals if they have referrals to the Centre. We are completely sure that the doctors will not stand for the improper use of the equipment under the non-profitable charity programme. This being the case, you can always appeal to the Foundation. “
