Barcelona to Host a Workshop of Mohyla Journalism School PhD Program
On 3 February 2009 , Barcelona (Spain) will host a workshop “Media Transformation(s) during Transition(s) to Democracy: Experiences form Ukraine, Turkey and Spain”. The event is held byMohyla School of Journalism and the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). The workshop will be attended by the President of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy Sergey Kvit and the Director of Mohyla School of Journalism Yevgeniy Fedchenko.
The event will be held under the PhD program in Mass Communications, which is a joint project of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
The program targets to train scientific and educational staff with the highest education degree. The course follows the pattern of the third cycle of European Higher Education Area based on so-called Salzburg Principles. The program will train researchers in global communications. Ukraine doesn’t have any specialists of the kind in commercially-focused researches or social importance surveys. Ukraine has seen few researchers of long-term influence of various media on various audiences or long-standing preferences and demands of the audiences including influence of the media on the society and its individual groups. Neither can Ukraine boast of interdisciplinary researches that regard communications in the context other sciences.
About Workshop
Communication researchers from countries, which have experienced structural alterations as the consequence of transition to democratic regimes from totalitarian ones, inevitably have generated lessons for an analysis of “communication in transition”.
Post-Soviet period in Ukraine, post-military dictatorship epoch in Turkey and post-Franco era in Spain have all provided examples of such studies from communication field, however with exclusively national focuses and approaches.
“Media Transformation(s) during Transition to Democracy: Experiences from Ukraine, Turkey and Spain” workshop aims to contribute to the growth of the comparative and transnational approach to the media transition phenomenon. Claiming that the paramount understanding of “the individual” can only be achieved via systematic consideration of the “the global” patterns, tendencies and structures; this workshop intends to initiate the connections that can be drawn from researches originating from these three countries, on media and democratization.
