Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine Organizes Visit of Donetsk Cancer Specialists to Advanced European Cancer Hospitals and Departments
From 29 September to 3 October Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine (FDU) organized a working visit of Donetsk leading cancer specialists to the best European cancer hospitals and departments to enhance efficiency of the Ukrainian cancer service. The team of Donetsk doctors learned the leading cancer practices of Germany and France.
The trip financed by the FDU aimed to let the specialists attend the conference “Maintenance of PET centers and cutting-edge radiology departments”. The Ukrainian team pursued a range of concrete objectives: to get familiar with the practices of the leading European hospitals and departments; to find out the most efficient method of applying cutting-edge technologies in cancer treatment and diagnostics; and to learn how to manage the patient-care system.
Within several days the delegation visited Pompidou Hospital in Paris and had an insight into the operation of its PET center. They also studied specific characteristics of the premises needed for PET/CT operation and applied facilities. The staff schedule, the system of patient selection and the procedure of PET/CT examination for patients with cancer were on the tour itinerary too. The Ukrainian specialists analyzed the quality indicators of PET/CT images of lungs and musculoskeletal system, etc as well as saw the production process of latest diagnostics equipment at Siemens plant (Kemnat, Germany). Here, parts and components of modern radiology facilities - computer tomography facilities, PET/CT (Biograph) and linear accelerators (Symbia SPEKT, ARTISTE Solution) – are assembled. The delegates also attended a presentation about the plant history, construction of the storage premises, and properties and benefits of linear accelerators by Siemens. The specialists visited University In-Patient Hospital of Erlangen city, which operates facilities by Siemens like a PET/CT room and gamma cameras equipped with Symbia Т6 CT.
The team witnessed an operation on intestinal tract cancer tumour conducted with Cyber Knife.
Later on Ukrainian doctors paid a visit to BrainLAB Company (Munich), which is the pioneer of radiosurgery. Company specialists presented their key achievements in the area of development of modern computer-based medical technologies. In particular, the company presented Novalis Tx system, which is a universal platform both for ray-surgery and ray-therapy.
Insight of Ukrainian medicals into the best practices of the leading European in-patient hospitals and cancer dispensaries is a significant component to the project “Cancer Can Be Cured. Timely Cancer Diagnostics and Treatment”.
