 Training for Journalists “Coverage of TB-Related Problems in Media”

To the attention of journalists and editors of Donetsk and Donetsk oblast media.

Dear colleagues,

Internews-Ukraine, international NGO, is pleased to invite you to participate in the project “Role of civil and social journalism to combat TB”, which will take place on 24-25 October in Donetsk.

The training is a joint project of the Foundation for Development of Ukraine and Internews-Ukraine.

The training targets to raise awareness among Ukrainian journalists of TB and increase the number and frequency of publications/TV stories dedicated to TB and related problems.

Goals:
∙ to give the listeners general TB information to raise their understanding of the epidemic spread;
∙ to extend the knowledge of journalists and improve their skills of covering TB-related problems in all types of media;
∙ to brief the listeners on how to deal with information, criteria of selection, balance, accuracy and trustworthiness of information;
∙ to brief the listeners on specific features and methods of work with the target audiences for a more efficient communication of information
∙ to brief the journalists on global TB practices and positive trends of TB elimination programs
∙ to discuss the ways and modes of cooperation between the state, businesses and NGOs to raise the efficiency of TB fighting practices;

Trainers of the project:

 

Kipiani
Vakhtang Kipiani is an independent journalist, whose working record includes position of editor in chief of Great Ukrainians project (Inter TV channel), editor in chief of Focus magazine, managing editor of Odna Nedelya (One Week) at K1 TV channel (2005-2006), as well as editor-in-chief and presenter of Dvoynoye dokazatel’stvo (Double evidence)  program at Studio 1+1 TV channel (2002-2005). He was a managing editor of Television News Service at Studio 1+1 TV channel (2001-2004) and political observer at Kievskie Vedomosty (1999-2001). Mr Kipiani is an honoured journalist of Ukraine, the winner of Vyacheslav Chornovyl Journalism Award, Second General-Ukrainian Journalistic Contest "Media On Media-2004" and A.Krivenko Award "For Major Contribution to Journalism". Vakhtang Kipiani also received the Ukraine National Council's Highest Award of Merit for People (Second degree).

 

Topchiy

Anton Topchiy is a consulting trainer in social journalism at Internews-Ukraine. Since 2005, Mr Topchiy has been holding trainings for journalists on HIV/AIDS coverage in media with support of  Internews-Ukraine, Center for Ukrainian Reform Education, Ukrainian HIV/AIDS Alliance, AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW) and UN Development Program in Ukraine. Starting from 2002, Mr Topchy and the International Migration Office, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the International Center for Journalism and British Council have been carrying out trainings for journalists on coverage of human trafficking in media. Mr Topchy has a strong record in TV. Since September 2006, he has been producer of SVIT-TB production-studio (Kyiv) In 2006-2007, he worked as a producer of Uvidet Vsyo (Total Review) program at Noviy Kanal; a script-writer of Ulyotny Otpusk (Mind-Blowing Holiday) program; and an author and director of TV stories at Honour of the Nation annual award ceremony. Anton is also the author of a range of manuals in social journalism.

A TB doctor will also be involved into the training to provide the specific information: key knowledge on the disease causation, ways of TB distribution, treatment methods and prevention.

The training is to be held on 24-25 September 2008.

Expenses covered by the training organizers:
• travelling of the delegates upon presentation of tickets (for a railway carriage compartment or a coach);
