PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT
UNIAN Information Agency will present of social and demographic research “Marriage, Family, Children” organized and funded by Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine. The event will take place on 23 June, 2008 at 11:30 in UNIAN premises (4, Kreshchatik str., Conference-hall).
The research was conducted by the Ukrainian Center for Social Reforms on basis of a poll covering Ukrainians aged 15-50.
The outcomes will be presented by:
Ella Libanova – associate member of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Director of Institute of Demography and Social Research
Anatoliy Zabolotny – director, Foundation for Development of Ukraine
Darya Kasyanova, PhD in Economy; project manager, Foundation for Development of Ukraine
The delegates will discuss the following points:
• Rumour about the crisis of the family as a social institution and withering of traditionally registered marriage. Is it exaggerated or not?
• What types of matrimonial relations do Ukrainians prefer?
• What types of marriage are young people committed to?
• What is the nature of the modern trend of increasing the birth rate registered for the past five or six years?
• To what extent does Ukraine tend to a one-child family or even child-free family today?
• What is the need of different population groups for children (desired number of children) and what obstacles are in place to satisfy it?
• What do citizens think about the introduced demographic policy and their vision of factors that can result in improvement of the demographic situation?
A difficult social and economic situation in Ukraine during the first decade of independence saw deep deformation, led to wider negative demographic trends, and caused an acute demographic crisis. Some odd “myths” and simply unprofessional opinions arose around the most acute and long-lasting demographic problems. Many issues remain open and are a subject of much discussion today.
