The project was launched in April 2008. Social help has been provided so far to almost 500 TB-patients being treated in out-patient facilities in Donetsk Region including TB dispensaries and general medical institutions. The help consists of food sets given to a patient by his doctor twice a month until treatment course is over.

The project is being realized together with the Red Cross Society. Red Cross visiting nurses deal with the problem-causing patients, which have stopped treatment at some stage. They undergo treatment and receive food packages at home.

The project in 2008 is being carried out in pilot cities and areas of Donetsk Region with big population, high TB morbidity, many interruptions of treatment courses, and a well-developed Red Cross structure. Up to 2,500 people with newly diagnosed and recurrent TB are expected to be covered by the project this year. So, the coverage may hit 70%.

The activities are organized under program Fighting TB Epidemic in Donetsk Region for 2007-2011 approved by the resolution of Regional Council session dated 31 May, 2007 No. 5/10-199 supported by the Donetsk Regional Council, Donetsk Regional State Administration, and the Foundation for Development of Ukraine.

Project pursues to ensure commitment and motivate people with TB to undergo a supervised treatment thus cutting the number of interruptions to 3% by 2011.
