National Reserve Sophia Kyivska Establishes Advisory Board Formed of 19 Well-Known Public Figures and Headed by Mikola Zhulinsky

A decision was taken to establish the Advisory Board for the National historical and cultural monument Sophia Kyivska. The Board will consist of 19 well-known public figures and opinion leaders in the fields of science, culture and social life.
Mikola Zhulinsky, a Member of Parliament of Ukraine, Head of the National Council on culture and spirituality and Director of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the Academy of Science of Ukraine, was elected the Chairperson at the first meeting of the Advisory Board which took place on 30 June 2006 in one of the premises of the national monument.

Establishment of the Board by the monument’s management has been initiated by the Foundation for Development of Ukraine. The Board’s aim will be to ensure that the monument, which is the common property of the Ukrainian people, is supported by public figures who are consciously and actively involved in the development of Ukraine.

"Preservation of the national historical heritage, which belongs to Ukraine and to all of us, is impossible without representatives of the general public", said Anatoliy Zabolotny, Director of the Foundation for Development of Ukraine, "This has been proved by international experience and by numerous examples of preservation and development of historical monuments of an equal importance. That is why, having had a close look at the operation of the monument while carrying out the project of the Metropolitan’s Residence restoration, we approached directors of the monument with the initiative to establish the Board. We are very happy that this initiative has been given a positive response by both the monument’s directorate and by well-known public personalities of Ukraine who have decided to accept the proposal to join the Advisory Board".

The Board has a number of objectives: to ensure transparent and open functioning of the reserve, to make information accessible to the general public (this will act as an instrument of public control), to create a development strategy for the reserve, to help solve short-term problems and to raise necessary finance.

As well as examples of efficient public entities of this kind in Ukraine there are also a number where improvements could be made. This project will be successful if it receives attention from the media and society. If this first Ukrainian project of establishing a public board proves to be effective, it will serve as an example for other bodies of an efficient way of solving problems with public support.
