Preliminary results of Contest for applied social and scientific studies announced
This contest focuses on development and improvement of TB diagnostics, treatment and prevention methods. It is of vital importance for the Foundation to support applied social and scientific studies which can be quickly used in practice and improve TB situation in Ukraine.
The following persons were selected the expert commission members:
• V.P. Melnik, Kiev Medical Institute of Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine
• S.O. Cherenko, Yanovskiy National Institute of Phthisiology and Pulmonology
• I. G. Ilnitskyy, Danila Galytsky National Medical University in Lvov
• V.G. Myasnikov, Kiev Postgraduate Medical Association
• D. G. Kryzhanivsky, Dnepropetrovsk Medical Academy
Participants submitted 13 bids developed by leading scientific institutions from various Ukrainian regions. 12 bids were reviewed by all experts. One bid was reviewed by two experts to avoid conflict of interests. After review of the bids the following decision was made:
• to support the bid developed by Yanovskiy National Institute of Phthisiology and Pulmonology, Medical Institute of Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine - Project for studying causes of multi-drug resistant TB, its prevalence rate among patients with lung tuberculosis detected for the first time, MDR-TB setbacks and developing effective MDR-TB treatment schemes.
• to support the bid developed by Lvov Research Institute of Epidemiology and Hygiene – Project for optimization of epidemiologic control of tuberculosis in penitentiary establishments – given the project is amended as advised by the experts within two weeks.
• to support the bid developed by Kharkov Postgraduate Medical Academy - Project for bacteriologic characteristics of various implications of tuberculosis among children – given the project is amended as advised by the experts within two weeks.

Final results will be additionally announced before 15 February 2008.

Foundation for Development of Ukraine is a non-profit organization founded by SCM Group on 15 July, 2005. The budget of the Foundation is financed by ZAO SCM. The areas of activity of the Foundation include contemporary education, health of the nation and cultural heritage.

National project "Stop TB in Ukraine" is being implemented by SCM's Corporate Foundation for Development of Ukraine. The 5-year project was launched in the year 2007 and will last from 2007 till 2011. The project budget is UAH 100m.
