 Foundation for Development of Ukraine and Ukrainian Journalistic Foundation Announce Contest for the Best Story on TB Fight

Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine with assistance of the Ukrainian Journalistic Foundation is happy to invite journalists to take part in the contest for the best story and coverage of TB struggle.
 

The contest will attract attention of the public to this pressing social problem. A new TB case is registered every 5 seconds around the globe, while one TB-patient dies every 15 seconds. The number of patients with newly detected TB had almost doubled in Ukraine from 1994 till 2005; 13.6% of them have drug-resistant TB.

 
To participate in the contest, we invite newspapers, journalists, TV and radio companies, online editions, and information agencies interested in making reports and writing articles about:
- danger of TB epidemic,
- disease prevention,
- need for early treatment,
- stories of ex-patients that overcame TB,
- needs of specialized medical facilities,
- tolerance to patients and improving quality of their living,
- consolidation of efforts of the government, socially responsible businesses, NGOs, and journalists to curb the epidemic.

 
Bidding stories must be published or broadcast during 20 May - 22 August, 2008. Articles shall be submitted in two copies together with medium profile (address, telephone, run), information about the article or broadcast information including the date of issue.

 
Submission deadline is 22 August 2008 inclusive (for mailed copies – 22 August 2007 according to the sender’s post institution stamp).
 

Selection criteria:
а) Number of stories published or broadcast about TB epidemic;
b) Quality of stories evaluated according to the following criteria:
• high importance of the theme raised to build attitude of people towards TB prevalence spread;
• good and deep reasoning of the story;
• contrastive information, statistics and analytical data;
• elocutive, accurate, and clear language;
• creativity, non-standard approach to material composition.
 

The prize for the best coverage of TB-related problems in print, online media, and information agencies:

First place – UAH 20,000 (1 prize)
Second place – UAH 10,000 (2 prizes)
Third place – UAH 5,000 (3 prizes)
 

The prize for the best coverage of TB-related problems in audio and visual mass media:

First place – UAH 20,000 (1 prize)
Second place – UAH 10,000 (2 prizes)
Third place – UAH 5,000 (3 prizes)
 

One editorial office will be awarded with UAH 5,000 for the proactive and consistent coverage of TB epidemic during a long period (the prize will be awarded following performance of the editorial office during 2007-2008).
 

Representatives of 25 mostly proactive editorial offices will be awarded with valuable prizes and invited to Yalta on 19-21 September to take part in a free of charge 3-day workshop. Contest organizers will be covering event participation fees.
