28.05.2009 - Media Master Class Reforming children’s institutions: is it possible in Ukraine?

On 28 May, on the eve of International Children's Day (1 June) the FDU will hold a master-class for media on reforming of institutions for orphans and children deprived of parental care. Today, these children are raised and educated by state-owned institutions, though family upbringing is certainly a priority. The excessive number of children in such institutions doesn’t allow to ensure comprehensive upbringing and development of children. The age-based principle makes a child go through several institutions – children's home, orphanage, orphanage-school - and each time he has to adopt to the new environment. Reforming the system is an intricate process discussed for long.

The Foundation invited the leading experts to discuss the future of the children institutions,

- Lyudmila Volynets, Director of State Department for Adoption and Protection of Children's Rights
- Roman Marabyan, Director of Kharkiv Regional Specialized Children's Home
- Dariya Kasyanova, FDU manager of projects Foster Care Promotion and Family Building,  and Large Families
- Vlada Ulyantseva, parent and supervisor of the family-type orphanage (with 9 children)

At the master-class the journalists and the experts will discuss the following questions:

- What is restructuring and why does Ukraine need it?
- Implications of staying in orphanages for health and development of children
- Resistance of staff to shutdowns of institutions
- Priority forms of care for orphans and children deprived of parental care (family-type orphanages)

Media are welcome to participate in the master class and discuss the future of institutional upbringing in Ukraine.

Date and time: 28 May, 11:00 – 14:00
Venue: lecture room of Digital Future of Journalism (ground floor), Complex 4 of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, 8/5 Voloshskaya st).
