 19.05.2009 - Мaster-class for media "Ukrainian museums: how do they live?"

18 May is globally marked as the World Museum Day. On this day we talk about the national cultural heritage, its general state and outlooks. On 19 May Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation holds a master-class "Ukrainian museums: how do they live?" designed for Social Journalism Club. The leading Ukrainian and international experts were invited to discuss this issue:

 

- June Taboroff Hankey, international expert on culture in development
- Nikolay Yakovina, Vice-Minister of Culture of Ukraine, ICOMOS President
- Nelya Kukovalskaya, CEO of Sofia Kyivska National Reserve
- Olesya Ostrovskaya, manager of Cultural Heritage Area, Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine

 

During the master-class the journalists will learn the practices of the UK in cultural management and see how they can be applied in Ukraine. These issues will be covered by Ms June Taboroff Hankey. In 2008, Ms Taboroff assessed the cultural needs and helped develop the strategy for culture within the European Neighbourhood Policy for five countries: Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.

 

Ukrainian experts will cover the following questions:

 

• Cultural heritage:  what prevails - spiritual or economic factors?
 

• Why do Ukrainian museums differ from European ones?
 

• Who, how and why restores Ukrainian architectural sites?
 

• How to manage cultural heritage efficiently?  
 

Media representatives are welcome to participate in the master-class.

June Taboroff Hankey

 

Director of Studies for the programme Public Administration International (PAI).
June is an international expert in culture development, with broad experience of institutional development and cultural policy formulation in more than 30 countries. She works for the World Bank, the European Commission, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Unesco World Heritage Centre and lectures at the Institute of Archaeology in London and the University of Pennsylvania.  Most recently she was selected by the Clore Leadership Programme course for cultural leaders.  In addition to project and policy work, she also carries out evaluations of cultural heritage programmes.
