ABOUT THE PROGRAMME PROMOTION OF FOSTER CARE AND FAMILY BUILDING

On 1 June 2008, the Foundation for Development of Ukraine launched the programme Promotion of Foster Care and Family Building.

Family values are a priority for the Foundation for Development of Ukraine. The Foundation makes every effort to ensure that a child lives and grows up in a family; the Foundation promotes national adoption; supports foster families and family-type orphanages, including granting material aid; cooperates with orphanage schools to prevent social orphanhood.

During the programme implementation, Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation:

• Has developed and launched the first national portal on adoption Say No to Orphanhood (Sirotstvy.net)

• Jointly with the Ukrainian Centre for Social Reforms, Aleksandr Yaremenko Ukrainian Institute for Social Research with the support of Glavred-Media has carried out the research Lifestyle of the Graduates of Orphanage Schools, Family-Type Orphanages, and Foster Homes

• Has identified and analysed the reasons of social orphanhood and people’s attitude towards guardianship and adoption of orphan children. The results are presented in the social and demographic research that was conducted jointly with the Ukrainian Centre for Social Reforms

• Has advocated the law of Ukraine On Organizational and Legal Activity of Custody and Guardianship Agencies. The new law will regulate the protection of the rights of orphans and children deprived of parental care, children with disabilities, and disabled grown-up citizens

• Has established four family-type orphanages in Donetsk Oblast, each of them raising more than five children

• Has launched the all-Ukrainian campaign This Child Needs a Family!. The project is implemented in partnership with Magnolia NGO and TV channels INTER, STB and 14 regional channels

• Has opened a hot-line on adoption questions. Everyone can get a free consultation on national adoption at the following number: 0 800 50 14 14. Every week the hot-line gets more than 100 calls from all over Ukraine

FDU’s partners in the programme implementation include FC Shakhtar, the State Department for Adoption and Protection of Children’s Rights, regional children departments, Magnolia NGO, HealthRight International, All-Ukrainian NGO Children Protection Service, Segodnya newspaper, Avlita ZAO.
