Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine together with the National University of Kiev Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) launch Mass Communications program to train doctors in social studies and journalism. According to Korrespondent.net, the project expects to establish an unrivalled doctoral program that will help the education system of Ukraine integrate into that of the EU by 2010 and train specialists in media studies.

In fact, Bologna Declaration endorsed by Ukraine requires our country to switch to the three-stage system of higher education comprising bachelor, master, and doctoral studies. However, no university in Ukraine trains doctors in the European sense of the word today.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian candidates of sciences are not regarded as classical doctors. The candidate or doctor degree will be abandoned to PhD according to the project documents designed by the Ministry of Education and Science and Higher Certification Committee.

“Our project can be a benchmark and a pilot project for the whole country. If successful, the practice can be applied to other universities”, says the Foundation.

According to the Foundation for Development of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education has approved the submitted project and gave the green light to establishing a Doctoral School in NaUKMA. The program is designed for 4-5 year of study. The first two years correspond to master’s education and comprise courses lectured by 3 different departments. Four doctoral students will start the course in 2008.

The project estimate amounts to $116,000.

We remind that the Foundation for Development of Ukraine opened the school "Digital Future of Journalism" based in Kiev Mohyla Academy in autumn 2007.
